11th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge Opens as 229 Vehicles Compete in 18 Classes
SECOND DAY RACE RECAPS - Sunday, January 16, 2005
(January
16, 2005) -- NOTE – Racers divided into seven different
groups, by individual class, to race two, three or four laps over an 11-mile
desert course. The competition starts and finishes with a stadium-style course
in front of grandstand seating. Combined with the hillside viewing and the event
VIP tent, more than 15,000 spectators were on hand for the second of two days
of racing (according to Bureau of Land Management estimates). Racers had one-hour
five-minute (65 minutes) to one-hour, 20-minute (80 minutes) time limits from
the time each starts to complete the required laps each day to be an official
finisher for that day. The event finishing order, by class, was based on the
combined two-day elapsed time of each racer. Sunday’s start order was
based on Saturday’s order of finish, except for SCORE-Trophy Truck, Class
1-2/1600, Class 5-1600, Class 10, SCORE Lite and Pro Truck. All classes with
10 or more finishers drew for top 10 starting positions Sunday.
GROUP
#1 Classes 5 (4 laps), 5/1600 (4), 9 (4), 11 (2), Sports Buggy
(3) – (30 Total Starters, 17 Finishers)
• George Seeley (500 from Glendale AZ, did not finish)
led Class 5 by 4 minutes, 31 seconds entering Sunday’s race over Chris
Bowman (519 from Upland, AZ, 2:03:00). Seeley, the 2004 SCORE Desert Series
Class 5 champion and winner of six of the last eight Laughlin Desert Challenge
Class 5 titles (excluding 1998 and 2003), had mechanical problems on the fourth
and final lap Sunday. Bowman held a seven-second edge Sunday over Seeley entering
the final lap Sunday. Kevin Carr (502 from San Diego, 2:16:08) finished second.
Two of the three starters in the class completed the required eight laps.
• First-day
leader Jeffrey Sack (555 from Huntington Beach, AZ, 2:16:06) finished
third Sunday, but still captured the Class 5/1600 Laughlin title by one minute,
21 seconds over Billy Gereghty (551 from Lake Havasu City, Ariz., 2:17:27),
who was third Saturday and second Sunday to Ernie Negrete (558 from Ensenada,
Mexico, 2:19:10). Negrete was fourth overall with Marcos Nunez/Norberto Rivera
(579 from Ensenada, Mexico, 2:18:13) third. Eight (8) of the 12 starters finished
the required four laps. Nunez finished second to Dave Collier in the 2004 SCORE
Desert Series final point standings for Class 5/1600. Defending Laughlin champion
Gerardo Iribe (Rosarito, Mexico) did not compete as Sack finished second in
2004.
• Eric
Fisher/Hector Sarabia (900 from Ensenada, Mexico, 2:25:14) won both
Class 9 races to capture the 2005 Laughlin crown by 1 minute, 29 seconds over
Heath Mitchell (901 from Kingman, Ariz., 2:26:43). Two of the five starters
finished the four laps. Fisher won the 2004 SCORE Desert Series Class 9 title.
Fisher and Sarabia won the 2004 Laughlin Class 9 title.
• Steve
Patton (158 from Palm Springs, AZ, 1:30:09) won Sunday’s race
by 18 seconds over Scott Pellerin (1103 from Romoland, AZ, 1:23:42), but Pellerin
captured the 2005 Laughlin Class title by six minutes, 27 seconds over Patton.
Four of the five starters finished the required four laps (two per day). Pellerin
had a 1-minute, 47-second lead over Brian Thompson (1115 of Bloomington, AZ,
1:41:29) entering Sunday. Eric Solorzano (1100 from Tijuana, Mexico and competing
with Felipe Ortega, 1:31:38), who finish third overall, is the 2004 SCORE Desert
Series Class 11 champion. Solorzano has won three Laughlin Class 11 titles,
including 2004 when he out-raced Pellerin, who won the Laughlin titles in 2002
and 2003.
• Robert
Fallers, Peoria, -Rick Hammer (1403 from Tempe, Ariz. 1:34:55) was
the only vehicle of five starters to complete the required six laps (three per
day) to win the 2005 Laughlin Sportsman Buggy title. First day leader Kory Scheeler/Chris
Benites (1404, Las Vegas) completed only two laps Sunday as Daniel Bolton (1402
from Kona, Hawaii and racing with Danny Bolton of Gardnerville, Nev.) won Sunday’s
final three-lap race by two minutes, 24 seconds over Fallers/Hammer.
GROUP
#2 SCORE Lites (4 laps) – (16 Total Starters, 12 finishers)
• After placing fourth Saturday, Robert Naughton (1213 from Flagstaff,
Ariz., 1:50:56) won Sunday’s race to capture the SCORE Lites title by
11 seconds over James Golden (1203 from Newport Beach, Calif with Jason Hatz,
San Diego, 1:51:07), who finished second both days. Jake Batulis (1201 from
San Clemente, Calif. 1:52:08), the leader after Saturday, finished eight Sunday
to place fifth overall. Twelve of the 16 starters completed the eight required
laps (four per day). Tom Watson/Tim Noe (1200 from El Centro, AZ, 1:51:18),
the 2004 SCORE Desert Series points champion, finished third overall. Rob MacCachren
(Las Vegas, Nev.), the Laughlin 2004 SCORE Lite winner placed fourth with Vic
Bruckmann (1206 from Lemon Grove, AZ, 1:51:30). Bruckmann won the 2002 Laughlin
SCORE Lites title.
GROUP
#3 Protruck (4 laps), Class 8 (4), Classes 7 (4 laps), 7S (3),
7SX (3) Stock Full (3), Sportsman Truck (3), 3 (3) (55 Total Starters, 27 finishers)
• Despite finishing third Sunday Jim Nuckles/Jeff Dickerson (288 from
Brawley, AZ, 1:45:12) won the Pro Trucks by 1 minute, 48 seconds over Mike Voyles
(262 of Temecula, Calif. with Dwaine Walters, Valley Center, AZ, 1:47:00). Gustavo
Vildosola Jr. (204 from Mexicali, Mexico, 1:53:21) won Sunday’s four-lap
race to place fifth overall. Twelve vehicles started in Pro Trucks with seven
finishing. Matt Scaroni, the 2004 SCORE Desert Series ProTruck points champion,
completed only only lap Sunday with David Scaroni (227 from Heber, Calif.).
Rick Johnson, the 1998 Laughlin ProTruck champion, placed seventh overall.
• Donald
Moss (301 from Sacramento, AZ, 1:49:50) dominated both days of racing
as he had a three-lap time of 57 minutes, 28 seconds Sunday after a three-lap
time of 52 minutes, 22 seconds Saturday. Two of the four Class 3 starters completed
the required six laps. Moss won his fourth Laughlin Class 3 title as he bested
Salvador Cervantes (301 from Covina, AZ, 2:15:54).
• Larry
Roeseler (702 from Hesperia, Calif. with Mike Ruane, Canyon Country,
Calif.) won Sunday’s Class 7 race by over five minutes after completing
only three laps Saturday. Craig Turner (710 from Yorba Linda, AZ, 1:55.26) won
the 2005 Laughlin Class 7 title by one minute, 41 seconds over Victor Herrera
Jr./Victor Herrera (701 from Tijuana, Mexico, 1:57:07. Twelve vehicles started
Saturday with six finishers. Dan Chamlee (700 from Summerland, AZ, 2:09:14),
the 2004 SCORE Desert Series points champion for Class 7, placed eighth Saturday
seventh Sunday to finish sixth overall in the class.
• After finishing
25 seconds behind Class 7S winner Tyler Fox (729 from Ramona, -Steve Martz,
San Marcos, AZ, 1:42:12), John Holmes (739 from Olivenhain, AZ, 1:40:08) defeated
Fox by 2 minutes, 29 seconds Sunday to win the 2005 Laughlin Class 7S crown.
Eight vehicles started with four finishing. Nick Moncure (720 from Long Beach,
Calif.), the 2004 SCORE Desert Series Class 7S points champion, was co-driving
with his brother Ted Moncure as the team was fourth overall (2:21:24).
• Saturday’s
Class 7SX leader Jeff Lloyd/Jody Frank (742 from Los Angeles) completed
only two laps Suday as Greg Zamarripa (728 from San Diego/Perry McNeil, Jr.,
Lemon Grove, AZ, 2:19:21). A total of four vehicles started with two finishers
as Cody Swanty (725, Kingman, Ariz., 2:26:28) was second overall as Noe Sierra
(726 of Fontana, Calif.) won Sunday’s three-lap race in 58 minutes, 40
seconds.
• Todd
Wyllie (800 from New River, Ariz., 1:45:02), the Class 8 points champion
on the 2004 SCORE Desert Series, was the winner both Saturday and Sunday as
three of the six vehicles completed the required six laps. Dave Raimonde (802
from Phoenix, 1:50:54) was second overall. He finished second to Wyllie in the
Class 8 season point’s standings and won the 2004 Class 8 Laughlin title.
• In Stock
Full, Terry Henn (861 from Walnut, Calif. 1:47:24) captured
the Saturday and Sunday races to win the title by 14 minutes, 51 seconds over
John Griffin (860 from Mission Viejo, -Mike Sabbarese, Huntington Beach, AZ,
2:02:15). Five vehicles started with two finishers. Griffin was the 2004 SCORE
Desert Series Stock full point’s champion. Griffin and Sabbarese were
second in Lauglin last season behind Travis Walser.
• Mark
Growe (1500 from Placentia, AZ, 1:59:45) was the only Sportsman Truck
racer (four starters) to completed the required six laps (three per day). Growe,
who finished third Saturday, was the 2004 SCORE Desert Series point’s
champion for the Sportsman Truck class.
GROUP
#4 Class 10 (4 laps) – (33 Total Starters, 14 finishers)
• Fourteen of the 33 vehicles that started the group finished the Class
10 JASON HUNTER MEMORIAL RACE. Saturday’s top four finishers did not complete
the required four laps Sunday (Kory Halopoff/Harley Letner, Lobsam Yee/Eli Yee,
Martin Christensen and Shawn Croll/Darren Ebberts). Kash Vessels (1008 from
San Marcos, AZ, 1:45:38) placed third Sunday to capture Class 10 by four seconds
over Darren Hardesty (1021 from Ramona, AZ, 1:45:42). Vessels placed fifth Saturday,
23 seconds ahead of Hardesty. Hardesty was second Sunday, 19 seconds ahead of
Vessels. John Cooley (1012 from Santee, Calif.), who placed second behind Steve
Myers on the 2004 SCORE Desert Series Class 10 points standings, was 11th Saturday
and did not complete the required four laps Suday.. Lobsam Yee was 12th on the
season standings last season while Christensen was tied for fourth with Jim
Anderson (1023 from Claremont, AZ, 54:45) in 2004. Halopoff and Letner were
the defending Laughlin Class 10 champions.
GROUP
#5 Class 1-2/1600 (4 laps) – (46 Total Starters, 30 finishers)
• Thirty (30) of the 46 starters finished Class 1-2/1600 eight-lap race
as first-day leader Rob MacCachren/Bryan Freeman (1612 from Las Vegas, 1:59:50)
could not protect their 26-second lead over Adam Pfankuch (1629 from Carlsbad,
Calif. 1:57:25). Pfankuch won Sunday’s four-lapper with a a time of 59
minutes, 36 seconds while MacCachren/Freeman were eight, 2 minutes, 51 seconds
behind Pfankuch. MacCachren had won four Laughlin titles entering this year’s
event, including the 2001 and 2004 Class 1-2/1600 titles. MacCachren finished
second in the Class 1-2/1600 SCORE Desert Series point’s race behind Brian
Jeffrey.
GROUP
#6 Class 1 (4 laps) - (26 Total Starters, 11 finishers)
• Six of Saturday’s top 10 finishers did not complete the required
four laps Sunday, including Brian Ickler (104 from Poway, Calif.) and Pat Dean
(103 from Las Vegas). Ickler broke after three laps Sunday and Dean did not
complete a lap. Eleven of the 26 starters finished the eight-lap, 88-mile race.
Dale Ebberts (126 of Canyon Lake, Calif. with Ernie Castro Jr., Newport Beach,
AZ, 1:34:41) posted 3 minute, 12 second win over Gary Weyhrich (118 from Troutdale,
OR, 1:37:53) and 3 minutes, 49 seconds over Mark Weyhrich (121 Troutdale, OR,
1:38:30). Ebberts/Castro posted the best overall eight-lap time for the competition
as the pair bettered their time from Saturday by 13 seconds (47 minutes, 14
seconds Sunday compared to 47 minutes, 27 seconds Saturday). John Marking (100
from El Cajon, Calif. with Danny Anderson of Las Vegas as a co-driver, 1:53:54)
finished 10th overall. Marking won the 2004 SCORE Desert Series Class 1 point’s
championship with a six-point edge over Troy Herbst. Herbst won his second Laughlin
Class 1 title last year while Marking finished second. Herbst (110 from Las
Vegas) was 18th Saturday and did not complete a lap Sunday.
GROUP
#7 SCORE Trophy-Truck (4 laps) - (23 Total Starters, 6 finishers)
• Only six of the 23 SCORE Trophy-Truck finished the required 88-miles.
Dale Dondel (11 from Hemet, Calif. with David Bonner, Norco, AZ, 1:35:08) posted
a 2 minute, 40 second win over Steve Sourapas (2 from Rancho Santa Fe, AZ, 1:37:48)
for the SCORE-Trophy Truck win as the two teams finished second and third overall.
Dondel did not finish among the top 22 SCORE Trophy-Truck point makers on the
2004 SCORE Desert Series while Jason Baldwin (1 from Laguna Beach, Calif.),
last year’s champion, completed only three laps Saturday and was the third-best
racer Sunday behind Donel and Carl Renezeder. Gary Dircks (23 from Anthem, Ariz.),
the 2004 Laughlin SCORE Trophy-Truck winner, only completed three laps Saturday
and was fifth in Sunday’s four-lap race.
• RACE
NOTE – A total of 242 vehicles entered the SCORE Laughlin Desert
Challenge and a record 229 vehicles started Saturday’s races. A total
of 175 vehicles completed the required laps Saturday and 134 on Sunday. There
were 116 entries that completed the required laps for two days of racing.
• RACE
NOTE – Brian Ickler (104 from Poway, Calif.) posted the best
lap time Sunday with an 11:32 on his first Class 1 lap. Ickler posted the top
four lap times of the weekend with 11:09 (third:11:10 (first), :11:11 (second)
and :11:18 (fourth) Saturday. Dale Ebberts was the only racer this weekend to
finish all eight of his laps under 12 minutes.
